The name Umai, inspired by the Japanese word umami, captures the essence of our practice. Just as umami describes a rich, deeply satisfying flavour, Umai stands for the richness of harmonious design.

It reflects our resolve in creating spaces that don’t merely exist but resonate—where beauty is not only seen but deeply felt, and where nature and modern living come together in seamless balance.

Our Team

Master of architecture - University of Cincinnati (2007)LEED Accredited Professional (BD+C) 2009.

Sharanya sees design as a journey of

self-discovery; where creativity, inclusivity and sustainability intersect to create lasting impact. With over two decades of experience, Iyer’s practice spans UNDP-led urban interventions in Tirupati,

large-scale mixed-use developments in China and South Korea with John Portman

& Associates, and luxury hospitality interiors alongside Philippe Starck’s team

climate-responsive design. Her approach goes beyond function, aiming to enhance both physical and emotional well-being through thoughtful spatial experiences. As an educator, Iyer contributes to shaping the next generation of architects through her roles as visiting faculty and jury at institutions like Dayanand Sagar, RV, and BMS Colleges of Architecture in Bangalore, mentoring with the same care that defines her architectural philosophy.

Neethi MP

Co-Founder Umai

Qualification: Bachelor of Architecture Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal (2002),

Member of COA (2003)

With 22 years of experience and a degree in architecture from Manipal Institute of Technology, Neethi has a trained eye that can spot a crooked tile in her sleep and fix it before anyone else even notices. On-site, she’s part architect, part detective, and full-time perfectionist, ensuring every design detail is executed to the highest standard.

Her expertise spans high-end residential, commercial, and retail design, all grounded in a deep understanding of materials and construction. Known for her sharp problem-solving skills, Neethi has a rare ability to turn

on-site chaos into cohesive, seamless design, often keeping the team on their toes and quietly in awe.

But behind that precision is a vibrant personality. With a sharp sense of humour and a love for the unexpected, she brings lightness to even the most demanding projects—whether it’s slipping in a playful design detail or cracking jokes through the dust and deadlines.
